In short, Wilde gave us an image of the pervert; Freud explained the disease; and Kinsey promoted its prevalence. It is this last stage that initiated the processes of men looking to their homosocial groups, knowing that one in ten are gay, and speculating who it was. This homospeculation, however, remained just speculation. This is because, apart from “acting feminine,” nobody could (or can) accurately determine who is gay.

This is a longstanding finding (Miracle & Rees 1994). For example, compared to the 6 per cent of American parents that discouraged athletic participation in the 1980s (an important time for my analysis of heterosexual masculinity), 75 per cent encouraged it (Miller Lite 1983). In the United States, where sport is intertwined with public education (Gerdy 2002), matters are worse. American high schools report participation rates as high as 72 per cent (Carlson et al. 2005). The fact that sports are run from within schools exerts cultural and institutional pressure for youth to participate in them.
