The revivalist movement associated with Evan Roberts attracted thousands of new members to the denominations. As early as 1903 the Calvinistic Methodists of south Cardiganshire, under the direction of two local ministers, Joseph Jenkins and John Thickens, had appealed for a new awakening, similar to that of 1859. By 1904 the revival was under way, and Evan Roberts, a ministerial student, had become the instrument by which this religious impulse spread to the occasional adherents and to those who had completely forsaken their religious affiliations.

The Guest, Keen and Nettlefold Company had emerged in the pre-1914 period as a significant metal and engineering enterprise. As a result of the war the company extended its control of coal mining in Glamorgan. The firm of Baldwins Ltd achieved a similar influence by the end of the 1920s.
