He earned his place in the Johnes family vault by marrying John Johnes’s daughter in 1882, changing his name to Hills-Johnes by royal licence in the following year. CARMARTHEN Sir Richard Steele (1672–1729), dramatist, politician (he was once expelled from the House of Commons for ‘uttering seditious libels’) and essayist, is best known as founder of the Tatler (1709) and the Spectator (1711) in collaboration with Joseph Addison.

Groes-wen cemetery came to be known as the ‘Westminster Abbey of Wales’ because of the large number of prominent Nonconformist ministers resting there, including, a few feet from Ieuan Gwynedd, the great William Williams, Caledfryn (1801–69), buried under a striking memorial bearing his face in basrelief. Poet, critic, a major influence in the development of the National Eisteddfod and an opponent of the total abstinence campaign as an infringement of individual liberty, he was described at the time of his death as ‘a household word among Caledfryn, Groes-wen the Welsh nation’.
