So that although William may not be quite what the summary says he is, there is evidence at points in the novel of the deliberate realisation Sons and Lovers 37 of the 'idea'. One scene of particular interest in the novel is the last part of Chapter 8-the sequence in which Paul burns the bread because he is talking to Miriam and Beatrice, and comes back to confront his mother; there is a quarrel with his father, and a final conversation between Paul and his mother. There is an earlier version of this scene, untouched by the ideas developed by the last version and explicit in the summary, extant in the play A Collier's Friday Night.
If Garnett's enthusiasm had come even three months earlier, it is doubtful whether it would have weaned Lawrence away from 'Paul Morel', which was proving enough trouble as it was. But with a month's convalescence to work in, and Garnett's advice and encouragement to sustain him-and with Heinemann obviously prepared to wait a little longer for 'Paul Morel', because of Lawrence's illness-then Lawrence could spend his month revising the 'Saga'. Garnett later wrote that he thought The Trespasser an advance over The White Peacock because it was less immature and sprawling; his main criticism of it was for its 'occasional commonness both of language and tone' 17 which suggests that he, too, found it over-written.
