But, of course, the Tardis is also a place where the Doctor holds people against their will - Ian and Barbara are themselves trapped there -and it is this constant displacement of the hermeneutic code by the proairetic, of the puzzle by the action, which, as a narrative strategy of the early Doctor Who, allows the Doctor's pseudo-explanation to suffice: You say you can't fit an enormous building into one of your small sitting rooms. But you've discovered television haven't you. Then, by showing an enormous building on your television screen, you can do what seemed impossible, couldn't you?

So when we did the Doctor Who music we tried to creep in one or two, not wrong notes, but imperfections, like a little bit of tremolo in the tune. We may have shifted the beat slightly just to make it sound as though it was played by somebody with feeling, rather than a stitched together music job ... The Doctor Who tune swoops up, it doesn't go up in precise notes. It sort of slides up from note to note, and it does give it a bit of a spacey feel. It was this contrast between 'normal' human imperfections and the unfamiliar, robotic and alien world of 'space' that determined the musical theme, rather than any 'time' concept, which Dick Mills felt could better be carried by the incidental music.

I didn't want it to just look like 22 'Doctor Who': The Unfold£ng Text 'time'- I wanted it to look familiar but odd, which is what the Doctor Who theme was. The title sequence, 'familiar but odd', was to establish the mood of the first representational sequence that followed, and of the episode generally. Pol£ceman The visuals proper begin with a policeman shining a torch outside a junkyard (prefiguring the mystery of Ian with h£s torch inside the junkyard later). The sequence and iconography is familiarly D£xon of Dock Green- the policeman coming to camera, the 'seedy' location, the fog - but made different by the gates which open by themselves as the policeman turns away.
